Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.

Replay systems will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the right to question particular decisions from the chair umpire, following the practice already in operation at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step comes just a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review other decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Importantly, there is no cap on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.

Practical Application

A recent incident took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further change at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
